- America On Line, begins service in Japan.

- America Online (AOL) brokered elaborate three-way deal
to acquire CompuServe; WorldCom paid $1.2 billion in stock to
acquire H&R Block's 80% stake in CompuServe; handed over
CompuServe's base of 2.6 million subscribers to AOL plus $175
million in exchange for ASN, AOL's Internet telecommunications
division; deal strengthened WorldCom's technological
capabilities: ASN, CompuServe's key technology (speedy
telecommunication lines, Internet connections).
