1883 to 1920 - William A. Heiss operated a successful buggy making business. As the demand for automobiles grew, the demand for horse-drawn vehicles declined; 1931 - factory was closed. For years, the building was used for storage, but mostly it lay forgotten; May 1978 - group of Mifflinburg citizens, led by Dr. Charles McCool Snyder, a retired history professor, saw first glimpse of the Heiss Coach Works (tools, a hit & miss engine, horseshoes, tires, wheels, dashboards, upholstered seats, paints, catalogs for parts and his own account books); recognized as one of only twelve craft/industrial museums in the United States that preserves and interprets an original site.

Back in the old days, before the creation of the Interstate Highway System and guarantee of a smooth roadbed, riding around in a flivver could be a hazardous proposition. Fortunately, prospective buyers could often consult any number of well-illustrated (and detailed) car catalogs provided by the dozens of automobile manufacturers that dotted the American landscape. New York Public Library's Digital Gallery has digitized significant number of these catalogs, placed online for the general public (date from 1909); catalogs include offerings from Buick, Delaunay, E.R. Thomas, Maxwell catalog from 1909, which features cars that are described as "Perfectly Simple and Simply Perfect").
